National Play-Doh Day is Sept. 16, and there's really only one way to celebrate — with Play-Doh! Mix up our natural Play-Doh recipe and check out these fun ideas to start playing!

Homemade Play-Doh recipe

Materials:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Gel food coloring
  • Parchment paper

Directions:

  1. Combine flour, water, salt and vegetable oil in a medium pot.
  2. Stir the ingredients over low heat until the mixture thickens and is no longer sticky.
  3. Remove the mixture from the heat and set it aside to cool.
  4. Once the dough is cool enough to handle, separate it out into smaller batches.
  5. Lay a large sheet of parchment paper out on the counter.
  6. Make a divot in each separate batch of Play-Doh. Put a small amount of food coloring in the divot and knead the Play-Doh on the parchment paper until the color is worked all the way through.

Play-Doh Tinker Toys

Take Play-Doh to the next level by building 3D structures with this homemade version of Tinker Toys!

What you'll need:

  • Play-Doh
  • Straws
  • Scissors

What you'll do:

  1. Cut several drinking straws in half. If you are using bendy straws, discard the flexible portion of the straw.
  2. Grab the Play-Doh and make several 1-inch balls by rolling the Play-Doh in between your palms.
  3. Stick the straws in the Play-Doh balls to build your own shapes and structures.

It's always a bummer when Play-Doh is mistakenly left out overnight and you wake up to dried out Play-Doh. Now you can make art out of those dried out Play-Doh pieces!

What you'll need:

  • Play-Doh
  • Card stock
  • Glue

What you'll do:

  1. Break the dry Play-Doh into small pieces. If you don't already have some dried Play-Doh on hand, flatten some out on the counter and leave it to dry overnight.
  2. Use the small pieces of dried Play-Doh to make a mosaic picture on the card stock.
  3. Glue the mosaic pieces in place.

You don't need fancy tools for Play-Doh fun — you can make your own Play-Doh tools with simple supplies!

What you'll need:

  • Empty spice jar
  • Craft foam stickers

What you'll do:

  1. Clean out an empty spice jar and remove any labels.
  2. Stick craft foam stickers to the bottom of the spice jar to make a stamp for the Play-Doh.
  3. Stamp designs in the Play-Doh with your homemade Play-Doh tool!
