You don't need to do a complete remodel to update your bathroom. If you are working on a tight budget, you can change out a few key items and get a whole new look.

Paint canNew hue

A fresh coat of paint can take your bathroom from drab to fab. Though white and beige tones are often used in bathrooms, you should add a little color. Muted shades of blue, green and yellow are terrific choices because they are calming and relaxing. For a girly bathroom, lavender is fun.

Try Glidden Premium interior paint in Palest Lavender. You can get an 8 ounce tester can at The Home Depot for about $3 to try it out before you commit to the color. Their paints are low-odor and low-VOC.

Fabulous fixtures

Change out your bathroom faucet and other hardware. You don't have to waste money on installation. Installing fixtures is relatively easy and you can get directions from your local home improvement store. Vintage-inspired brushed nickel hardware has been popular for a while, but shiny chrome fixtures are also trendy once again.

For a simple, yet chic style, check out the Kohler Forte Widespread bathroom faucet in shiny (polished) chrome. It's on sale at Amazon.com for under $150.

Cute curtain

If you have a shower with a curtain rather than glass doors, then adding a new shower curtain is an easy way to change the look of your bathroom. The shower curtain is one of the first things people notice when walking into a bathroom, so be sure to pick one that really stands out. Whether you want something colorful and whimsical or frilly and romantic, it's up to you.

Bed Bath & Beyond offers a fabulous selection of shower curtains for under $20 each. If you are going for a bright floral theme, consider the Interdesign Gerber Daisy Vinyl shower curtain.

Plush towels

Invest in a high quality set of towels. Plush, fluffy, thirsty towels are worth a few extra bucks. Pick a neutral color to blend with any style of bathroom decor. For an amazing combination of strength, absorbency and softness, consider the City Scene Supreme Egyptian cotton towels. Their 6-piece sets come in a variety of colors and are priced at about $50.

A touch of glamour

Finish off your bathroom makeover by adding a touch of high glamour to the room. Add an ornate frame around your bathroom or go big by replacing your overhead light fixture with a glitzy chandelier. For a beachy theme, Sanibel Seashells mini chandelier is perfect for the bathroom. This four-light chandelier is marked down 45 percent right now and priced at just $150.

Small items can make a big difference in the bathroom. Look for a unique piece of wall art, an unusual soap holder or other affordable items that can make a large impact. If you don't have enough counter space, install a wall cabinet above your toilet to store away some of your essentials.
